The Lost Thing

The Lost Thing (2005), written and illustrated by Shaun Tan, follows a boy who discovers a strange creature while collecting bottle tops on a beach. The creature appears to be lost, but nobody else seems interested in helping it. The boy takes it home and begins looking for a place where it might belong. During his search, he encounters unfamiliar institutions, mysterious signs, and a world that seems very different from his own.
