Subway Sparrow

Subway Sparrow (1997), written and illustrated by Leyla Torres, follows a young sparrow that becomes trapped in a busy subway station in the city. Commuters rush past, largely unaware of the tiny bird in distress. A group of children notices the sparrow and decides to help it, communicating across languages and working together despite differences. They carefully guide the bird, trying to keep it safe from the bustle of trains and people. The story follows their efforts to protect and rescue the sparrow, highlighting the coordination, patience, and attention required. Through their actions, the children navigate the noisy, crowded subway environment while ensuring the sparrow’s safety. The narrative traces the sequence of events from the sparrow’s discovery to the children’s successful attempts to care for it.
