My name is not Refugee

My Name is not Refugee (2017), written and illustrated by Kate Milner, follows a young boy and his mother who must leave their home because it is no longer safe. His mother explains what their journey will be like: saying goodbye to friends and familiar places, walking long distances, waiting, sleeping in unfamiliar places, and encountering new foods and languages. Along the way, the boy experiences sadness, uncertainty, tiredness, but also moments of curiosity and hope. The story follows their movement toward safety and a new home, while inviting readers to imagine how they might feel in the same situation. By focusing on the child’s individual experience rather than only on the label “refugee”, the narrative emphasises that he is first and foremost a child with his own identity, feelings, and hopes.
