Mango, Abuela, and me
Mango, Abuela, and Me (2015), written by Meg Medina and illustrated by Angela Dominguez, follows a young girl named Mia who moves to a new city with her family. Mia’s grandmother (Abuela) comes to live with them, but she speaks Spanish while Mia speaks mostly English, so the two struggle to understand each other at first. Mia feels lonely and unsure how to connect with Abuela. One day, Mia decides to take Abuela out in the stroller and they begin to explore the neighborhood together. As they share these outings, Mia and Abuela start learning each other’s words and routines, gradually finding ways to communicate. The narrative follows their growing connection and the small everyday moments that help bridge the language gap between them.
