CONTENT:
We Love Dinosaurs (2016) by Lucy Volpin presents in a simple but effective way different species of dinosaurs. Through colourful illustrations and a very simple written text, the author presents to the readers various types of dinosaurs, describing some of their physical characteristics and their behaviours. For example, the picturebook presents some very big dinosaurs, and others which were very small, some were herbivorous while others were carnivorous, but all of them are loved by the readers. At the end of the picturebook the author underlines how unfortunately these have become extinct bringing the readers to reality.
WHY USING THIS PICTUREBOOK:
This picturebook can stimulate children’s curiosity towards dinosaurs. It introduces the concept of extinction, bringing children to familiarize with facts and habits of ancient species. The picturebook does not provide detailed information about dinosaurs, but it can work as a stimulus to activate the interest of the children. The comprehension of new expressions is supported by the symmetrical relation between text and illustrations. In every double spread the author compares the characteristics of two species of dinosaurs, this can initiate a discussion on differences and similarities. The text is entirely written in rhyme and presents the repetition of the expression “we love”. At the end of the book the concept of extinction is efficiently supported by the illustration which, in this case, represents only the skeletons of the dinosaurs.
