Flowers Are Calling (2015) is a picturebook written by Rita Gray and illustrated by Kenard Pak. It presents the pollination process and shows how flowers are able to attract animals and insects. In every double spread the authors show a different flower and its interaction with specific insects or animals. The picturebook describes the complex interdependence between plants and animals in the ecosystems and it helps children understand the process of pollination. The picturebook shows that there is a huge variety of species in nature with specific characteristics for different types of plants.

WHY USING THIS PICTUREBOOK:

Through the written text and the illustrations, this picturebook allows children to grasp the complexity of natural ecosystems and develop the awareness on the importance of different creatures. The whole picturebook is written in rhymes with the repetition of some expressions: “The flowers are calling a […]. No, not a […]” (Gray & Pak, 2015). There is a symmetric relationship between text and illustration that promotes the comprehension of new expressions. In some double spreads the authors present detailed information on some flowers and offer to the readers/listeners the opportunity to reflect on their characteristics.
