Sea: A World Beneath the Weaves (2019) was written by Patricia Hegarty and illustrated by Britta Teckentrup. This picturebook describes and depicts the underwater scenario in a harmonious and poetic way thanks to its colourful illustrations. This is a peep-through picturebook and the tiny holes in the pages give children the possibility to discover new items in following pages. This non-fiction picturebook presents the life under the sea, it shows fish, dolphins, sharks, and many other submarine creatures. The authors introduce the characteristics of some fish describing the environment in which they live (e.g., the coral reef, the seafloor, etc.) and different aspects of underwater life.
WHY USING THIS PICTUREBOOK:
This picturebook can show the children some sea creatures and some aspects of underwater life. The text is written in rhymes: this allows the storyteller to convey the musicality of the language. The symmetrical interplay between the written text and the illustrations facilitates the comprehension of specific terms and new expressions about different fish that live in the sea. Though the use of read-aloud talk, the storyteller can invite children to observe the illustrations, linger on details and discover new information. The presence of holes in the picturebook can stimulate children’s curiosity and enhance their imagination. Children can be invited to make predictions and inferences.
